Introduction to Aluminum PCBs

Stream PCB specializes in manufacturing Aluminum PCBs, the most widely used type of metal core PCB. Our aluminum substrate PCBs feature an aluminum core as the base material, with a standard FR4 layer on top. The aluminum base acts as a thermal clad layer, efficiently dissipating heat and keeping heat-generating components cool. This enhances both board performance and overall device reliability. Among aluminum PCB manufacturers, our customers trust Stream PCB for providing the most effective solutions for high-power applications.

Why Choose Aluminum PCBs

Superior Thermal Management – Electronic components are highly sensitive to heat, making effective thermal management essential. Aluminum, being an excellent heat conductor, efficiently transfers heat away from critical components, preventing overheating and ensuring longevity.

Eco-Friendly & Recyclable – Aluminum is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, meeting RoHS and WEEE compliance. It is also fully recyclable, making it a sustainable choice for PCB manufacturing. Even when disposed of, aluminum does not contaminate soil or water bodies.

Exceptional Durability – Unlike traditional fiberglass or ceramic PCBs, aluminum provides superior strength and resilience. It enhances mechanical support, preventing accidental damage during assembly, handling, and regular use.

Lightweight Yet Strong – Aluminum PCBs offer a perfect balance between durability and weight. While providing structural strength and impact resistance, aluminum remains lightweight, making it ideal for weight-sensitive applications.

Structure & Applications of Aluminum PCBs

At Stream PCB, we manufacture high-quality aluminum PCBs designed for efficient thermal management and high-performance applications. Standard aluminum PCBs typically consist of three major layers:

Three Key Layers of Aluminum PCBs :

1. Copper Layer

We use electrolytic copper foil, which is etched to create the circuit traces. This layer holds SMD components and forms interconnections for electrical signals. Compared to traditional FR4 PCBs with the same line width and copper weight, aluminum PCBs can carry more current without excessive heating, thanks to the aluminum base.

2. Insulating Layer

The core functional layer of the aluminum PCB, acting as an electrical insulator, heat conductor, and bonding material between the copper layer and the aluminum substrate.
This layer facilitates heat transfer from the circuit to the aluminum, preventing components from overheating.
Higher thermal conductivity in the insulating layer ensures better heat dissipation, increased power output, and extended board lifespan.

3. Metal Substrate

The substrate metal is chosen based on factors such as cost, weight, hardness, strength, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficient. Aluminum is the most widely used material due to its optimal balance between performance and cost. We typically use aluminum grades such as 1000, 1060, and 6061. For applications requiring even higher thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, we also use copper, stainless steel, iron, or silicon steel as substrates.

Applications of Aluminum PCBs
