High-Tg PCBs

Introduction to High-Tg PCBs

As a trusted manufacturer of High-Tg PCBs, Stream PCB is known for producing high-quality boards that meet the growing demand for advanced electronics requiring enhanced thermal stability. High-Tg PCBs are increasingly sought after due to the technological advancements in electronics, particularly for applications that involve high-temperature environments. Tg, or glass transition temperature, is a crucial property of epoxy materials, indicating the temperature range where the base material transitions from a rigid, glassy state to a soft, plastic-like state.

Each PCB substrate has a specific Tg, beyond which the material begins to soften. If the operating temperature during PCB fabrication exceeds the Tg value, it becomes challenging to manufacture the board. Therefore, manufacturers typically opt for substrates with a higher Tg to ensure better stability, improved heat resistance, and enhanced mechanical and chemical properties.

At Stream PCB, we recommend selecting materials with a Tg value that is at least 25-30 degrees higher than the board’s operational temperature. For example, a PCB with a rated Tg value of 150°C should only be used in applications where temperatures remain below 125°C.

What are High-Tg PCBs?

High-Tg PCBs are made from materials that maintain their solid and rigid properties until they exceed their glass transition temperature, at which point the material transforms into a softer, more plastic or rubber-like state. This transformation leads to a significant decline in the electrical and mechanical properties of the PCB, potentially shortening the product’s lifespan.

For standard FR-4 PCBs, the Tg ranges between 130-140°C. Medium-Tg materials can endure temperatures up to 150-160°C, while High-Tg materials can withstand temperatures of 170°C or higher. These materials offer improved mechanical strength, better chemical resistance, and enhanced temperature tolerance compared to standard FR-4.

As modern electronics continue to move toward RoHS and WEEE-compliant materials, the demand for higher Tg materials grows, especially since lead-free assembly processes require higher temperatures. With our expertise in producing top-tier High-Tg boards, Stream PCB is ready to provide you with the best solutions for your high-temperature applications.
