Parts Ordering for PCB Assembly

At Stream PCB, one of the most common questions we receive for every PCB Assembly project is: How many parts are needed to complete the assembly? This question is crucial, especially for time-sensitive and high-reliability projects, as accurate part quantities are essential for seamless production.

While customers may not be familiar with how components are mounted using tapes and reels on automated SMT pick-and-place machines, proper planning is vital. Delays in processing and delivery often occur due to insufficient component quantities. To avoid this, we recommend Full Turnkey PCB Assembly for all projects. This approach ensures timely delivery and the highest product quality by handling everything from component sourcing to assembly.

For a smooth process, provide your Gerber files and Bill of Materials (BOM) for a quote. Email us at sales@streampcb.com or call 408-982-5851 for further assistance. With Stream PCB, you can trust us to deliver precision and reliability in every project.

PCB Assembly Component Quantities and Overages: Ensuring Smooth Project Execution

To prevent delays in PCB assembly projects, it is crucial to order adequate quantities of components, including extra units to account for potential attrition and breakages. To assist customers in determining the right quantities, we provide an overage ordering sheet tailored to component sizes and requirements. Below is a guide for ordering Surface Mount Device (SMD) components based on their size and total project needs:
SMD Component Size/Footprint Total Requirement < 20 Nos. Total Requirement < 50 Nos. Total Requirement < 100 Nos.
01005

Order 200+
Order 250+

Most SMD resistors and capacitors are inexpensive, often costing less than a few cents each. Ordering a couple of hundred components on a strip typically costs under $5, making it more cost-effective than purchasing digi-reels.

However, for higher-cost components, the following overage guidelines are recommended:
Total Requirement Quantity
5 – 10 Nos.
Order 3 Nos. extra
50+ Nos.
Order 5 -10 Nos. extra
100+ Nos.
Order 10 -20 Nos. extra

Important Note: For 01005 SMD sizes, manufacturers like Murata and TDK supply 4 mm tape widths. However, most standard cassette feeders are designed for 8 mm tapes, making 4 mm tapes incompatible. We recommend avoiding 4 mm width tapes to ensure compatibility with assembly equipment.
